Unrequited

We found her

Draped across the shore

Sharpest black scales

Head to tail,

We found her

Lips salted to a crust

Hair of scattered rainbows

Oil slick on the rocks,

We found her

Frosted sea-glass stare

Fixed on the place

Where he used to stand,

We found her

Abandoned by a tide

That counted her days

Like the sun.

Did he find her, reaching for him from the other?

Was he there when she started to crack?

Knowing what she had left behind,

Knowing she could not go back.

And witnessing her need for him,

Did he turn and let her bleed into the foam?
